The predominant beauty trends of spring-summer 2010 set themselves apart, according to tradition, from the inspirations of this past season. One of the most interesting and evocative trends is, in my opinion, the bleached brows craze, which made its appearing act months ago in several editorials.

The historical evolution of eyebrows appearance has always been characterized by its cyclic and biphasical nature. In the ‘60ies a fine and drawn-on line; in the ‘80ies full and defined, as to suggest an ideal of a woman who found her dimension in a powerful (model), almost manly, along with a new awareness of her her own social collocation, a businesswoman who needs to affirm her personality; in early ‘90ies again thin, arched and fake-looking a’la Tori Spelling (aka Donna from Beverly Hills 90210); in early 2000s thick and unkept, but neat.

Although last winter, with the help of all of those solid ‘80ies inspirations (above all the official come-back of structured shoulders) we’ve seen eyebrows sculpted by pencil strokes (if you’re into this, I reccomend Shu Uemura Hard Formula brow pencil, shuuemura-usa.com) or blended with a ton sur ton eye shadow, enhanced and darkened up, often the only focal point of the make-up, matched with hardcore cheekbones contouring action; the trend of these last months is diametrically opposite.

Brows disappear, and , in most extreme cases, are shaved off, becoming a statement-non-statement, a risky aesthetic choice for a woman who is not afraid of playing with androginy, who’s not reluctant to sacrify her femininity, for the sake of an edgy alien-like, ethereal look, which -personally- I do adore.

Eye make-up, in this case, has no boundaries, it can be smoky and heavy, graphic, precise or intentionally carefree (another huge trend for spring) or au naturel, for a total nude look. The hues can range from the classic bronze, golden, copper eyeshadows, to neon and fluo liners, the real must for this coming summer for a “minimun effort, maximum outcome” make-up, where not even mascara is necessary, gradually leaning to a cosmetic minimalism.

Among the first girls who rocked this look we find Lara Stone, who made bleached brows a real ‘It’ trend, but she wasn’t alone though : Natasha Poly, Sasha Pivovarova, Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman, Agyness Deyn and even Italian Bianca Balti jumped on the bandwagon.

Of course my dispassionate advice is ‘Do Not Try This At Home’, especially those with darker hair… you could see them turning out orange! did I scare you enough? Do entrust yourselves to expert hands as to avoid beauty disasters.

If you want to try this look without shedding tears in remorse just hours later, here’s some tricks you can put to use : professionals apply extra full coverage foundations and stick glue to erase them.

Finally, I want to point out that, just like a hair dye, even colored brows need a certain maintenance : the infamous re-growth is always ready to pop out… and who would like to have two-colors eyebrows anyway?

The nude look gets even “nuder” indeed. What’s your take on this? do you prefer brows à la Madonna from ‘Holiday’ or are you digging this trend?

Ovviamente il mio spassionato consiglio è ‘Do Not Try This At Home’, sopratutto alle ragazze scure di capelli…rischiate di farle diventare arancioni! vi ho spaventate abbastanza?
